IP emergency calls are one of the key innovations of the new NG eCall system, which will become mandatory in Europe from 2026
What is an IP emergency call?
An IP (Internet Protocol) emergency call enables communication between a crashed vehicle and a Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) over 4G/5G networks. Unlike traditional voice calls that rely on circuit-switched technology (used in 2G/3G eCall), IP calls use packet-switched technology, making them faster, more reliable, and better suited for transmitting critical data.
Key advantages in NG eCall
- Transmission of richer accident data (MSD v3)
- Shorter call-setup time with the PSAP
- Interoperability with next-generation PSAPs (NG112)
- Ability to include extended information, such as Euro NCAP data
Why is this evolution important?
2G and 3G infrastructure is being phased out in many EU countries. Adopting IP technology is not only a regulatory requirement; it is also a way to save more lives through faster and more efficient emergency response.
How can CESTEL help you?
With our NG eCall Server you can adapt your PSAP to the new regulation, and with our NG eCall Tester you can validate the correct operation of your NG eCall systems in both IP and legacy environments. Ensure the interoperability of your solution before NG eCall becomes mandatory.
